3rd District CASA, Inc. is hosting their 6th annual “Love-a-Child”

Dinner/Silent auction on March 31, 2012.  This event is designed to increase awareness about our organization. Our guest speakers will be a former foster care youth.  Our fundraiser will also help raise needed funds to train and educate our volunteers and expand our program.  CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children) represent the best interest of abused, neglected and deprived children in court proceedings within our community.
Our organization depends on volunteers, donations and grants for
funding.  Over 300 children in Jackson and Harmon counties were served within our community in 2010 and over 100 volunteers were trained.  We traditionally have a live and silent auction at our event to raise funds.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month & Month Celebrating the Military Child:

Every year in this country, more than 500,000 children are removed from their families, placed in some form of foster care and thrust into the court system. In Oklahoma, over 8,600 abused and neglected children were wards of the juvenile courts in 2009. These children have faced challenges and hardships that most of us cannot imagine—from a lack of food, clothing or shelter to actual physical endangerment–not to mention the emotional trauma that can result from these situations. In FY2009, Jackson County reported 94 confirmed incidents of abuse and neglect while Harmon County reported 10 cases. [Okla. D.H.S. Annual Report, Child Abuse Statistics, FY2009].  The Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program’s average is 2.5 children per case.  A trained CASA volunteer can provide the child with a friendly face and someone to trust, while at the same time making sure that the court knows the child’s true situation and any needs he or she may have. We are only able to serve a fraction of the children who need a CASA volunteer within our district.  We must continue to build the number of trained volunteers to reach the goal of providing a Court Appointed Special Advocate for each child who needs one.
CASA volunteer advocates work along side the Department of Human Services (DHS) to ensure that children are safe and have a permanent home. A CASA advocate is a child’s voice in the courtroom, speaking on behalf on their best interests. Since the program’s inception in 2002, the program has trained over 100 volunteers and served over 300 children.
To celebrate children, not only abused children, CASA advocates teamed up with Jackson County DHS and members of the Altus Air Force Base community, to tie over 320 blue ribbons on trees in front of the Jackson County DHS building on 201 S. Main St in Altus.
There is a great need to train more volunteers.  To assist with this need, a new volunteer advoacte training class will begin April 20, 2010 and run for 5 weeks on Tuesday and Thursday evenings @ SWTC. Applications are now being accepted for the training. For more information, phone the CASA office @ 580-482-4600.
