Fundraising and Donations Support 3rd District CASA: shop, donate, feel good. Shop Here We can now take online donations! 3rd District CASA, Inc. is hosting their 6th annual “Love-a-Child” Dinner/Silent auction on March 31, 2012. This event is designed to increase awareness about our organization. Our guest speakers will be a former foster care youth. Our fundraiser will also help raise needed funds to train and educate our volunteers and expand our program. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children) represent the best interest of abused, neglected and deprived children in court proceedings within our community. April is Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month & Month Celebrating the Military Child: Every year in this country, more than 500,000 children are removed from their families, placed in some form of foster care and thrust into the court system. In Oklahoma, over 8,600 abused and neglected children were wards of the juvenile courts in 2009. These children have faced challenges and hardships that most of us cannot imagine—from a lack of food, clothing or shelter to actual physical endangerment–not to mention the emotional trauma that can result from these situations. In FY2009, Jackson County reported 94 confirmed incidents of abuse and neglect while Harmon County reported 10 cases. [Okla. D.H.S. Annual Report, Child Abuse Statistics, FY2009]. The Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program’s average is 2.5 children per case. A trained CASA volunteer can provide the child with a friendly face and someone to trust, while at the same time making sure that the court knows the child’s true situation and any needs he or she may have. We are only able to serve a fraction of the children who need a CASA volunteer within our district. We must continue to build the number of trained volunteers to reach the goal of providing a Court Appointed Special Advocate for each child who needs one.
